Scraps. If you sew, you definitely have a box or many boxes of these pieces. Here’s the problem with scraps – I can’t throw them away because that would be too wasteful but I also can’t use them for most quilt patterns. They are just too small. To use up these pieces, I have been tackling my scrap bins with more intentional projects. For example, improv quilting, small zipper pouches, and even a quilt pattern. This blog post is all about my quilt pattern for using small scraps of fabric – the Scrappy Lines quilt pattern.
Using Scraps
My philosophy for using scraps is like my philosophy for using dinner leftovers. The key for me with dinner leftovers is that they must be reinvented in a new and fresh way to garner excitement. For example, when we make a roast and baked potatoes for dinner, the next day we make tacos with the extra meat. The point is, it has to be something new with intention. The scrappy lines quilt pattern was born out of these intentions – use the leftovers but in a new and exciting way.
My messy, overflowing bucket of beautiful color from my scrap fabric had to be put into something clean, simple, and modern. The bright white background in my scrappy lines quilt helped pull together many pieces of chaos into a modern quilt that fits seamlessly into any home. And you know what, I have seen dozens of beautiful scrappy lines quilt and I know your scraps can be turned into one too.
Are you a beginner quilter?
New to quilting and you cannot imagine how anyone has a mountain of scraps? No need to worry. This pattern is written to be used with scraps or fresh yardage from a store. Plus, the techniques in this quilt are extremely beginner friendly. This is actually my go-to pattern anytime someone asks me how to get started with quilting. It will help you develop the skills of sewing with a 1/4″ seam allowance, pressing seams, and following a block-based pattern. You’ve got this! And trust me, soon you will not only be a proficient quilter but you will have a mountain of scraps from all the quilts you just can’t stop making.
Inspiration
I’ve made two scrappy lines quilt and a handful of pillows from this pattern. My first scrappy lines quilt used a clean, white background with a large variety of fabrics from my scrap bin.
My second scrappy lines quilt was made during the scrappy lines quilt along. I made this quilt for my 5-year-old. It has a cheery color pattern, perfect for a 5-year-old. If you would like to follow the blog posts from the quilt along, get started at the link below:
