What’s a Side Lake Stitch Kit?
This kit is the first of its kind that mixes natural dyeing with sewing. The sewing and natural dyeing kit contains one small project that is equal parts of natural dyeing and sewing. Here’s how it works. In the kit, there is pre-treated fabric that is ready to be dyed naturally with flowers. The hand-picked marigolds or cosmos will turn the white fabric into a beautiful yellow-to-orange hue. There is a small amount of Iron in the kit that will turn some of that yellow fabric into green. Once you’ve hand dyed your fabrics, you can begin piecing together the May Day Flower Wall quilt. The background fabric is provided in the kit so you don’t need to purchase anything. Also included in the kit: PDF instructions that walk you through the process of naturally dyeing fabric and sewing the May Day flower quilt.
Backstory
Why a sewing and natural dyeing kit? Ever since I began natural dyeing several years ago, I have found my naturally dyed sewing projects bring me more joy and result in quilts I treasure. Each piece that is hand dyed with plants has a glow, unlike any synthetic fabric. But it also tells a story of picking a flower, or learning of a new plant, the time spent soaking and stirring fabric, and the thrill of watching it turn from white to a whole new shade. This is something I want to bring to other sewing enthusiasts. However, I know it’s hard to jump into a new craft, especially one that can be confusing with many steps. That’s why I made this kit. This kit provides a very simple jumping point into natural dyeing. I’ve already treated the fabric to eliminate a hurdle for you. The instructions are clear and simple so you will easily be pulling naturally dyed fabric out of your dye pot in no time. Even though it is a simple project, I can imagine most of you will want to learn more once you experience the wonder of natural dyes.
Who Is it For?
The Side Lake Stitch Kit is for fiber enthusiasts, crafters, quilters, and anyone who wants to learn a new and sustainable craft. Both the natural dyeing project and the sewing pattern involved in this kit are beginner friendly. This means whether you are only a sewer, only a dyer, or neither, you will be able to complete this project.
Options Beyond the Kit
